Pole dancing could have its beginnings in pagan maypole dancing, usually done at the Spring fertility rites, dating from the 12th century. Or it could have its origins in African tribal dancing, where betrothed women danced around a wooden phallus to impress their future husbands and show them how they wanted to be made love to. Whichever way you cut it, pole dancing has always been a sensual form of dance.

In the 1920s, during the Great Depression, traveling fairs around the US had girls dancing in provocative ways, usually using a tent pole for balance or as part of the dance. These Hoochie Coochie dances (as they were called) are the first instance of modern pole dancing. The kind of pole dancing that you often find in gentlemen's clubs, however, started in the 1980s in clubs in Canada, which quickly spread to the rest of the world.

Today's aerobic pole dancing owes a lot of its impressive and astounding poses to Chinese Pole dancing, which is an acrobatic form of dancing, with emphasis on strength and endurance. Chinese Pole dancing was typically performed in circus shows - think Cirque du Soleil.

Pole dancing is a misunderstood taboo, often associated with strip clubs and sleazy places. Over the past few years, it has been widely recognized as an art that easily incorporates ballet, modern, bellydancing, and burlesque that can tell a riveting story. Aside from dance, pole has entered our lives as a great method of fitness and both forms have taken the world by storm!
